Seven Research Programs are conducted at the CENIEH, each one with one or more
working groups, carrying out different research lines. There is a Coordinator
for each program, who is responsible for its development.
Coordinator: Dr. José Mª Bermúdez de Castro Risueño
The scientists of this Program, coordinated by Dr.
José María Bermúdez de Castro, carry out research on human fossils (originals and copies)
with the aim of obtaining information about the biology of these species and getting data
for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies and proposals of evolutionary sceneries.
This Programs research is interested in the study of the distribution
and abundance of fossil species in relation to biotic and abiotic factors.
Studies of biologic community structure and paleoclimatology based on the
distribution of species are included here.
This program performs an auto-ecological research, focused on the study of man as a very special kind in their environment.
This program addresses issues of: subsistence (opportunism, hunting, taking of carrion, gathering), demography, social
organization, sociobiology, lifestyles, territorial models (predation and supply territories), space employment and economic
strategies (planning and resources acquisition).
This program undertakes research and consulting in archaeological survey and excavations, in continental and
marine-littoral environments, through the techniques of the Earth sciences and under a geoarchaeological viewpoint.
The aim is to analyze archaeo-paleontological sites dating from the Upper Miocene to the Holocene and the relations
with their natural context, with an accent on site formation processes and the interactions between cultural and
environmental factors.
