José María Bermúdez de Castro Risueño (Madrid, 18/06/1952). Graduate (1977) and PhD (1985) in Biological Sciences from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. Profesor Titular at the Department of Paleontology, Universidad Complutense of Madrid (1988-1990), Científico Titular (1999-1998), Investigador Científico, and Profesor de Investigación at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (1999-present [on leave]). Director of the CENIEH from 2005 to 2012. Coordinator of the Paleobiology Program of the CENIEH (2013-present). Príncipe de Asturias award of the “Investigación Científica y Técnica, 1997, Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades award of the Comunidad de Castilla y León (1998), Grupo Ciudades patrimonio de la Humanidad award (2009). Doctor Honoris Causa, by the Universidad de Burgos (2010). Honorary Professor by the University College of London. Speciality: Paleoanthropology. Co-director and Principal Investigator of the field season and research of the Sierra de Atapuerca Pleistocene and Holocene sites.
