Call 2023-VIII

Electron Spin Resonance SR2023-III

Competitive access call 2023-III for the Electron Spin Resonance laboratory is now open. The objective is to offer access to the facilities of the laboratory.

  • Opening: 04 December 2023

  • Deadline: 17 December 2023

The call SR2023-III will cover the ESR dose evaluation of quartz samples, including (i) Gamma irradiation* and (ii) ESR measurements at low temperature (<120 K) by qualified users.

* For health and safety reasons, gamma irradiations will be carried out by CENIEH staff.

Rate A will be applied, as established in the general rules for accepted competitive access requests.

To submit your proposal, please register in the User Office before creating your request, or enter your user and password if you are already registered. Complete the Competitive Access tab and select the code SR2023-III.

Request for Electron Spin Resonance SR2023-III

The objective of this call is to offer access to the facilities of the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) Laboratory at CENIEH for activities related to the ESR dose evaluation of quartz samples, including (i) gamma irradiation, and (ii) ESR measurement at low temperature.

(i) will be carried out by the CENIEH staff, while (ii) will be performed by “Qualified Users” only

In order to be properly evaluated, the requests should include the following:

  • A brief scientific description of the project, including its relevance, originality and innovative nature.

  • A CV of the Principal Investigator. Note that the CV of other members of the research team may also be submitted for evaluation (although not mandatory).

Proposals should be submitted from 04 December 2023 to 17 December 2023. The call will remain open until 11:59 pm (Madrid time) on the last day. Any request received after the deadline indicated will not be evaluated for this call.

The following information should be also included in the proposal under the tab “General information in the Project / Experiment section” of the User Office portal:

  • The total number of samples to be processed, as well as the number of aliquots and irradiation doses per sample.

  • Whether the sample splitting in multiple aliquots prior to gamma irradiations will have to be performed by CENIEH staff (if so, this will imply an additional cost).

  • The preferred time period for the ESR measurements.

Conditions

  • The analyses will be carried out between the reception of the samples and 31 December 2024.

  • A maximum of 60 samples will be accepted for this call.

  • The samples to be irradiated shall be preferably received within 8 months after the publication of the results of the call. If not, the laboratory will be entitled to refuse the samples.

  • The samples will be preferentially processed following their order of arrival in the lab, although other factors (e.g., number of aliquots and irradiation times) will also be taken into account to optimize irradiation and measurement times.

  • Proposals including only the gamma irradiation of samples will not be considered for this call.

Facilities

Gamma irradiation will be performed on a Gammacell-1000 (Cs-137)

X-band ESR measurements will be performed with either an Elexsys or an EMXmicro Bruker spectrometer.
