Located in the heart of the city of Burgos, the first Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS) in Castilla y León is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to support excellent research activity and to contribute to the national R&D&I system. As part of the national ICTS roadmap and aligned with its current corporate visual identity, this infrastructure is an international benchmark both for the advanced technological equipment it hosts and for the cutting-edge scientific research carried out within it.
Laboratories, multipurpose rooms, open spaces and work areas have been designed and equipped to ensure that research on human evolution carried out in Burgos becomes a global reference. This objective is achieved through the attraction of scientific talent, the organisation of international scientific conferences and meetings, and the application of innovative techniques, not only in fundamental research but also in the provision of services to the scientific community and the business sector.
CENIEH is also listed in MERIL (Mapping of the European Research Infrastructure Landscape), the European inventory of research infrastructures promoted by the European Science Foundation (ESF) and the European Commission, where detailed information on its facilities and capabilities is available.
At the European level, CENIEH is part of the European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS) ERIC, the European research infrastructure dedicated to the study, conservation, documentation and management of cultural and natural heritage. E-RIHS was officially established as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) in 2025, with Spain among its member countries. Within this framework, CENIEH contributes through the Spanish node by providing scientific and technological capabilities in heritage science and strengthening Spain’s presence in this European infrastructure.
The development and consolidation of these capabilities were previously reinforced through CENIEH’s participation in IPERION HS, a European project that promoted transnational access to research infrastructures in heritage science and laid the scientific and organisational foundations for the subsequent establishment of E-RIHS ERIC.
In parallel, CENIEH contributes to the European data infrastructure ARIADNEplus, facilitating access to and reuse by the scientific community of archaeological and archaeopalaeontological data generated and curated at the institution, in line with open science principles and the European ecosystem of heritage research infrastructures.
