“A voyage between fossils and primates”

The CENIEH paleoneurologist Emiliano Bruner will present a book on the evolution of the brain on May 16th, in the Museo de la Evolución Humana, with the participation of the psychiatrist and science writer Pablo Malo Ocejo

Emiliano Bruner, a paleoneurologist at the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH), will present the book “La Evolución del Cerebro Humano. Un viaje entre fósiles y primates” ("The Evolution of the Human Brain: A voyage between fossils and primates") on Tuesday May 16th 2023 at 8:15 pm, in the Museo de la Evolución Humana in Burgos, with the participation of Pablo Malo Ocejo, a psychiatrist and science writer who is the editor of the blog “Evolución y Neurociencias” ("Evolution and Neuroscience").

This science outreach book, which integrates anthropology and neuroscience with the objective of investigating our brain in the context of its own natural history, is an extended and updated version of a volume published in 2018 as part of the series “Neurociencia y Psicología” (“Neuroscience and Psychology”), published by the newspaper El País.

The first part presents the evolutionary anthropology and certain historical issues that relate the brain to our scientific culture. The second part is dedicated to the primates, their brain anatomy and the influences of key factors such as metabolism or the social system. Part three talks about fossils and paleoneurology. The final part takes on the relationship between archaeology and the cognitive sciences, the possibility of researching the mental processes in extinct species, and the role of technology.

“This is a work that, instead of proffering striking conclusions with simplistic and superficial answers, aims to unfold the charm and beauty of the open questions that still constrain what we know about the brain”, according to Bruner.
