For the past fifteen years, the CENIEH has been inspiring scientific vocations and bringing science closer to society, thanks to the collaboration of FECYT, in an event that has welcomed more than 20,000 visitors, offered over 100 activities, and involved more than 200 scientists and technicians

This morning, the Universidad de Burgos and the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH) presented the 16th European Researchers’ Night in Burgos, an initiative framed within the Programa Horizonte Europa, which will take place on Friday, September 26, in more than 400 European cities. Its aim is to connect researchers with children, young people, and adults in an engaging and festive way, with the collaboration of the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT) – Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.
The presentation, interpreted into Lengua de Signos Española (ILSE) thanks to ARANSBUR (Asociación de Familias de Personas Sordas de Burgos), featured contributions from Jordi Rovira Carballido, Rector’s Delegate for Research Dissemination and Culture at the Universidad de Burgos (UBU), and Mª Isabel Soto Muñoz, head of the Unidad de Cultura Científica e Innovación (UCC+I) at UBU.
Also taking part was Chitina Moreno-Torres Rodríguez-Contreras, head of the UCC+I at CENIEH, who emphasized that “this edition marks 15 years, 16 nights, and more than 5,000 days dedicated to fostering scientific vocations and bringing science closer to citizens. During this time, over 100 activities have been offered, more than 200 scientists and technicians have participated, and more than 20,000 people have attended.”
All activities are free of charge, though workshops and lab visits require invitations, which can be reserved through Eventbrite.

Estación de la Ciencia y la Tecnología
This venue offers free activities for all audiences that combine scientific rigor, participation, and creativity. There will be exhibitions, conferences, workshops, and escape rooms. Highlights include the educational space El poder del hidrógeno, the collaborative mural Innova Mural on the city of tomorrow, an exhibition and lecture about Einstein’s visit to Spain and its impact on the perception of science, as well as a family finance workshop that will bring economic and technological concepts into everyday life.
Visitors will also be able to see the exhibition Geolodía: 20 años acercando la geología a la sociedad, which showcases the outreach work of the Sociedad Geológica de España to promote this discipline that, while often little known by the public, “is a key science for understanding the major challenges facing today’s society, such as climate change, natural hazards, the ecological transition, and access to critical raw materials of great geopolitical value,” explained CENIEH geochronologist Davinia Moreno, who introduced the exhibition.
Ratón Pérez Campaing
The popular Campaing returns once again, aiming to continue building the world’s largest collection of children’s milk teeth, for research in dentistry, paleoanthropology, and forensic science. It will take place in a tent at the entrance of the CENIEH, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Launched in Burgos in 2014, the campaign has spread across Spain through research centers and universities, such as the Universidad de Córdoba, the Universidad de Zaragoza, and the Sincrotrón Alba in Barcelona. Since 2023, institutions in Argentina, Brazil, and Italy have also participated in the collection effort.
Rural Night
With the support of its town council, the village of Villasur de Herreros will celebrate this science festival for the third consecutive year. Activities include the storytelling session Historias o prehistorias de sapiens y neandertales, a lecture on the Trinchera del Ferrocarril de Atapuerca, and a guided tour of its chapel, which houses a small museum featuring a scale model of the Sierra de Atapuerca.
